Our Mission

The use of art as a creative act:

If communicative codes are meant to convey meaning along a circuit, coding and decoding the signal as accurately as possible, the artistic languages have a task more complex and rich. Not only must they communicate meaning, but they must also stimulate the creation of new, enriching concepts and expressive language functions, and thus human thought.

Structuralists--primarily Mukarovsky and those belonging to the so-called Circle of Prague--started from a functional study of language and showed that the communication along the coding-decoding circuit of the sign is now active not only to the sender of the signal, but also to those who receive and interpret. He who benefits from, creates art.

If the language of communication is to transmit properly, the actors, the sender and the receiver, need to share a code. This condition does not assume an absolute value in artistic communication. You can support this assertion with numerous examples. Westerners ignore everything about the Moai culture of Easter Island, just as we also ignore the specifics of Incan or African cultures. However we are fascinated by their products. Those expressive languages have profoundly influenced our visual arts, and their engagement in them has produced a structural enrichment of expressive possibilities.

Nevertheless, the ingratitude of communicative code can generate confusion in the receiver: this occurs in those who, faced with unusual forms of expression, try the feeling of being in front of a wall.

The mission of our gallery is this: not only to exhibit art and act as a transmission channel, but also to provide theoretical tools and training to overcome the gap of interpretation that contemporary art offers. Above all, we want to convey this concept: artistic communication does not require a correct reading, but a free interpretation. Art is liberated and therefore creative.
